Belmont Seikido is a member of the World Seikido family

What is Seikido?

Seikido, a belt graded martial art based on TaeKwonDo and Aikido, was founded in London Ontario Canada in October 1987 by Doug Gagel, Zeke Petkovic, and Phil Rikley.

World Seikido uses the International TaeKwonDo Federation belt ranking system, patterns and tenets as the basis for instruction. The family oriented classes provide great instruction and discipline for all ages. At the end of each belt level, students participate  in a grading/test to demonstrate the knowledge learned for that level. Every grading/test includes techniques from both Tae Kwon Do and Aikido.

World Seikido classes are designed for all ages and family members to participate together. There is no age limit, however, it is important that participants know their left and right (most of the time) and are able to follow simple directions. Young children often participate better when a parent or older sibling is participating with them. Many other martial arts classes are designed specifically for age ranges as many people prefer to keep children and adults separate. I personally feel that it is important for children and adults to not only participate in the same class but also to practise together.
TaeKwonDo is very similar to Karate as they both use kicks, strikes and blocks as self defense and many focus on the sport aspect of competition. Aikido is similar to Judo or Jujitsu and mainly uses redirection of attacks and grabs as self defense. In World Seikido we teach a combination of TaeKwonDo and Aikido based techniques primarily for self defense, although there are many other physical and cognitive benefits as well. Watch the video and visit www.worldseikido.com for more information about World Seikido.
Each martial arts dojo/school also has unique aspects based on the instructor(s); at Belmont Seikido the most important thing is that everyone has fun. To unsure that students have fun we try to incorporate choices from the students as often as possible throughout each class, this reinforces that each person's interests are valuable and important. Family participation is encouraged especially with young children.

It can often take a few classes to determine if martial arts is a good fit for someone, especially children. Sometimes it is more the teaching style of the individual instructor that makes the biggest difference. We welcome everyone to drop by Belmont Seikido anytime and check out the class, Friday evenings 6:00-7:00pm at the HUB (across from the grocery store in Belmont).
